With summer in full swing, it’s time to start serving up your favourite warm-weather wine in new and exciting ways! White wine cocktails are great for day drinking as well as evenings spent sitting in the backyard with friends. We’ve compiled a list of white wine based cocktails to suit any occasion. From lighter drinks to ones with a bit of a kick, and from fruity flavours to vanilla bases, we’ve got you covered.
A light alternative to red wine sangria, white sangria is the perfect beverage to serve up in the warmer months. The fruit in this classic cocktail mean that it’s light, tasty, and could even pass up as nutritious (almost)!
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup brandy
1 bottle (750mL) dry white wine, chilled
1 can (350mL) lemon-lime soda, chilled
1 cup sliced peaches, fresh or frozen
1 cup sliced strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 medium lemon, sliced
1 medium lime, sliced
Ice cubes to serve
Mix sugar and brandy in a pitcher until the sugar is dissolved. Add the remaining ingredients and stir gently. Serve over ice.
A simple spritz is perfect 2 minute cocktail that requires next to no ingredients, meaning you probably won’t have to make another trip to the store for this one. It’s the easiest way to dress up any wine you have stored, is great for parties, and doesn’t strain the wallet.
2 parts white wine
1 slice of lemon
Ice cubes to serve
Fill your wine glass with ice. Add white wine, and then soda water. Garnish your drink with lemon.
For a drink with a bit more of a kick, this cocktail is perfect. The combination of wine, vodka and elderflower will give you a nice buzz at your summer parties, but is also light and refreshing enough for you and your guests to stay cool and hydrated in the heat.
2 ½ parts white wine
1 part vodka
1 ½ parts soda water
½ part elderflower cordial
1 lime wedge
1 slice of cucumber
1 slice of grapefruit
1 mint leaf
Fill your wine glass with ice. Add all ingredients. Garnish with grapefruit, mint and lime.
If you’re craving a berry-flavoured cocktail, kir is an easy drink that takes next to no time to whip up. Popularised in French cafés in the mid 19th century, this cool beverage will take you back in time. You can use any white wine you like for this mixture, although dry wines are preferred. You can also mix up this classic to make a kir royale, by replacing white wine with champagne or sparkling wine. Because it’s a rather sweet cocktail, pairing it with salty snacks is optimal.
4 parts white wine
⅔ part crème de cassis (or blackcurrant liqueur)
Pour the crème de cassis into your wine glass. Add the white wine slowly.
Although it requires a little more finesse, this sweet cocktail is still rather easy to make. If you want to impress your party guests and put on a bit of a show, making this drink looks impressive enough to do the trick. You can use any type of white wine you have, however chardonnay is best suited for this drink.
60mL white wine
30mL dark rum
15mL vanilla bean syrup
15mL pineapple juice
1 lime wedge to garnish
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a tall glass. Garnish with lime.
